Soldier Kills Captain, Four Others, Self In Borno

A Nigerian soldier identified as Silas Ninyo (93NA/36/2608) has taken his own life after killing an army captain and four others in Chibok, Borno State.

The tragic incident happened during an attempt by one Captain T. Mani to stop from beating innocent civilians in the area.

Mani (N/14430), who was providing security for worshippers with a team of soldiers during Sunday service in Chibok, was shot dead by Ninyo on Sunday afternoon after he tried disarming the soldier, following a distress call that Ninyo was beating civilians for unknown reasons.
The corpse of Mani has been moved to Yola.

According to a situation report by the Nigerian army, “Captain Mani, accompanied by soldiers, moved to the scene and freed the civilians. But while trying to disarm the errant soldier, Captain Mani was shot dead by Staff Sergeant Ninyo, who later shot himself dead after killing four others.”

However, the 26 Brigade of Nigerian Army has instituted a Board of Inquiry (BOI) to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

According to a statement by Brig-Gen. Sani Usman, Director Army Public Relations, “about 12.50pm today (Sunday), the unit received a report that a staff was seen to be drunk and misbehaving to civilians. An officer was dispatched to the scene with a view to bring him back to base. The officer did his best, but the SNCO (senior non-commissioned officer) refused several entreaties to calm him and be disarmed by the superior officer.

“Unfortunately, the Staff Sergeant shot the officer dead and then killed himself. Their remains have since been evacuated to a military facility. The BOI is expected investigate the incident and promptly turn in its report and findings in one week.”

He noted that “the Nigerian Army is a disciplined and professional force with zero tolerance for any act of indiscipline and misdemeanor.”
